I am really excited about this next animated film! Dumbo (1941) is definitely one of the less popular Disney films, but I think it has some of the cutest animation in Disney history. Speaking from a personal perspective, I didn’t particularly enjoy this film growing up because it was so depressing. Dumbo, an adorable elephant with abnormally large ears, is deemed an outcast by the other elephants in the Casey Junior Circus. As if that wasn’t enough, his mother is taken away and put in solitary confinement after she lashes out on a teenage boy who was tantalizing the shy and mute baby Dumbo. For the majority of the film, his only companion is a little mouse Timothy, who becomes a protector for Dumbo since all of the other “bully” elephants are afraid of mice. During the song “Baby Mine” when Dumbo goes to visit his encaged mother, one cannot help but be affected by the tragedy of the situation. However, some of the other happier and more unusual scenes, like “Pink Elephants on Parade” when Dumbo and Timothy accidentally get drunk, make up for the depressing quality of the rest of the movie.
All I have to say is that this film, however depressing, has some of the most adorable animation I have ever seen. Dumbo is by far one of the cutest and most lovable characters in Disney history.
